Big Changes to Driving Test Bookings
If you’re learning to drive, there are some important changes to how practical driving tests work across the UK, and they could affect how quickly you can book a test.
From 12 May 2026, the DVSA is introducing new rules designed to stop bots and “black market” resellers from grabbing test slots before real learners can.
What you need to know:
You’ll need to book your own driving test. From 12 May, driving instructors will no longer be allowed to:
- book driving tests for pupils
- change test dates
- cancel tests on your behalf
That means you will need to manage your booking yourself using the GOV.UK website. So if your instructor normally sorts your test for you, that’s about to change.
You only get 2 changes per booking. Once you’ve booked your test, you can only:
- change the date
- change the time
- swap the test
…a maximum of 2 times. After that, you’ll need to keep the booking you’ve got or cancel and start again.
Test swaps are getting stricter too.
You’ll still be able to swap tests with another learner, but only if:
- both learners still have booking changes left
- the swap is made at least 10 full working days before the test
Changing test centres? There’ll be limits
From 9 June 2026, if you change your test location, you’ll only be allowed to move it to one of the three nearest test centres. This is another move aimed at stopping people bulk-booking tests all over the country.
Why is all this happening?
The DVSA says these changes are mainly about:
- stopping bots and automated apps grabbing test slots
- reducing “black market” reselling of appointments
- making the system fairer for genuine learners
If you’ve ever struggled to find a driving test, this is the DVSA’s attempt to fix it.
What this means for learners
A few things are now more important than ever:
- Be ready before you book
- Don’t waste your booking changes
- Keep track of your own test details
- Make sure your theory test doesn’t expire while waiting
