How Long Is a Theory Test Valid For?

The DVSA driving theory test helps to ensure drivers are equipped with the necessary knowledge of how to remain safe on the road. Covering a range of multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test, the theory test ensures learners understand safe driving practices and the rules of the road.

Learners need to pass the theory test before they can take their practical driving test at a nearby test centre. Once they achieve a theory test pass, they are free to take the practical test as many times as it takes to get that all-important driving licence – but how long does a theory test pass certificate last while they continue to learn to drive?

How Long Does a Theory Test Pass Certificate Last?

So, you’ve passed your theory test, congratulations! Your certificate will expire exactly two years after the date you passed your theory test, not at the end of that month. Within these two years, you’ll need to pass your practical test, or you will need to take your theory test a second time.

Once you’ve passed your theory test, it’s a good idea to discuss when to book your practical driving test with your driving instructor. They will have a strong idea of when you’ll be ready to take the test, or will give you an idea of when you should be booking it – especially with potentially lengthy wait times.

Within the two years, you can have as many driving lessons and take as many practical tests as you need to pass. As long as you get your driving licence within the validity period, there’s nothing to worry about.

Retaking the Theory Test if You Don’t Pass Your Practical Test

If you don’t pass your practical test within two years, you’ll need to rebook and retake the theory test. This can be a pain, as you could end up waiting months for theory test slots if you live in a particularly busy area. Even though you’ve been taking practical tests in recent months and may have another test booked, you’ll need to achieve your theory test certificate again.

The test pass mark will remain the same as it was when you first passed, although the questions and hazard perception clips are likely to be different, as they are randomised for each test. Make sure you get back on your theory test revision as soon as possible – just because you passed doesn’t mean a retake will be easy.

If you do need to retake, we recommend booking your theory test as soon as possible to avoid delays.

How to Prepare to Retake Your Theory Test

When retaking your test after two years, you will need to revise the 50 multiple-choice questions and hazard perception clips to ensure you pass your theory as quickly as possible. It’s unlikely to have expired, but you should also ensure your provisional driving licence is still valid.
